It is a French word meaning “to sweep” or “to paint”.  It is a form of highlighting or ombre’ that allows for a sun-kissed, natural looking hair color.  The color or bleach is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated natural looking effect.  Balayage has softer, less noticeable regrowth lines and looks like its been lightened by the sun.  Because it is hand painted, the placement can complement your haircut, skin and features.  It also grows out beautifully.
